PBT, short for Polybutylene Terephthalate, is a synthetic thermoplastic polyester belonging to the polyester series. It is formed by the polycondensation of 1,4 - butanediol with terephthalic acid (PTA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). The chemical formula of PBT is, with a relative molecular weight ranging from 30,000 to 40,000. It typically appears as a milky - white, semi - transparent to opaque, crystalline material with a glossy surface and a density of 1.31 to 1.55 g/cm³.

PBT is valued for its high mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability, making it ideal for precision components. It shows low water absorption (0.1%), excellent electrical insulation even in humid environments, and resistance to chemicals like oils, alkalis, and most solvents-though vulnerable to halogenated hydrocarbons. Its fast crystallization at low temperatures enables efficient processing via injection molding, extrusion, or blow molding. Widely used in electronics (connectors, circuit boards), automotive (engine parts, sensors), and mechanical sectors (gears, bearings), PBT's versatility is further enhanced by modifications with glass fibers or flame retardants for specialized applications.

Application

PBT resin has been modified with various additives and blended with other resins to obtain good comprehensive properties such as heat resistance, flame retardancy, and electrical insulation, as well as good processing properties.
PBT-modified materials are widely used in electrical appliances, automobiles, aircraft manufacturing, communications, home appliances, transportation, and other industries. For example, after PBT has been modified with glass fiber, it can be used to manufacture electronic components that require high dimensional stability under high-temperature conditions for a long time.
PBT has a high breakdown voltage and is suitable for making parts with high voltage resistance.
