Polyethylene terephthalate

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), also known as polyester, is a versatile unsaturated polyester composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. With a molecular formula of (C10H8O4)n, this thermoplastic polyester can appear as a colorless transparent (amorphous) or milky white solid (crystalline), boasting a density between 1.3 to 1.4g/cm³, a refractive index of 1.655, and a remarkable transmittance of 90%. This material melts at 265°C and withstands cold temperatures down to -70°C. Known for its excellent mechanical properties and folding endurance, PET is resistant to oils, fats, dilute acids, and alkalis, but not to concentrated acids and alkalis. It excels in temperature resistance and maintains its mechanical properties across a wide range. PET effectively blocks gases, water, oils, odors, and UV light, retaining a brilliant luster. Additionally, it has excellent fiber-forming properties, wear resistance, and electrical insulation.

The advantages of modified PET

1. Exhibiting the highest heat distortion and service temperatures among thermoplastic engineering plastics.

2. Its high heat resistance ensures minimal deformation or discoloration in a 250°C solder bath for 10 seconds, ideal for electronic and electrical components.

3. With a bending strength of 200MPa and an elastic modulus up to 4000MPa, it offers remarkable creep resistance, fatigue resistance, and high surface hardness, akin to thermosetting plastics.

4. The cost of ethylene glycol in PET production is significantly lower than butanediol in PBT, making PET resin and reinforced PET among the most cost-effective engineering plastics.
