Polypropylene
Polypropylene (PP) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer derived from propylene monomers through addition polymerization. It is typically a white, waxy solid, non-toxic, odorless, transparent, and lightweight. With a chemical formula of (C3H6)n, its density ranges from 0.89 to 0.92 g/cm³, making it the thermoplastic resin with the lowest density. Its melting point spans 164 to 176 ℃, softening around 155℃, and operates efficiently between -30 to 140 ℃. Known for its lightweight nature, wear resistance, antibacterial properties, and easy dyeing, PP is extensively used in fiber products like clothing and blankets. Its superb insulation performance makes it ideal for manufacturing shells and components for refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and televisions. Boasting excellent chemical stability, heat resistance, transparency, and mechanical properties, it is also pivotal in medical device manufacturing. Modified PP plastic enhances the performance of conventional polypropylene by incorporating fillers, reinforcing agents, toughening agents, flame retardants, and other additives, or through chemical methods such as blending and copolymerization.
1. Mechanical property enhancement
High strength and rigidity: Introducing glass fiber, carbon fiber, or mineral fillers like talcum powder and calcium carbonate significantly boosts the tensile strength, flexural modulus, and impact resistance of PP, making it ideal for structural components.
